Driffield Dairy Danger

Co Op Dairy Chimney, Driffield

Concerns have been raised over the safety of the Co-Op Dairy on Eastgate by local residents.   Not only has the front wall been demolished by a truck too large for the yard, but the chimney stack on this dilapidated building is in imminent danger of collapse.

The interim manger at the yard has been pressing his Head Office to sanction a quote obtained last October, but still the company, based we believe in Bradford has not given permission for the work to go ahead.  The chimney stack is obviously bowed, and one of the pots is well off the vertical – how long before it topples on the head of an innocent passer-by?

Cllr Felicity Temple, who was alerted to the problems of the yard by local residents said, “This situation is well out of hand.  The Co-Op don’t seem to care about the state of their property.  I hope no one is hurt as a result of their callous indifference for our residents.”

Cllr Jonathan Owen is in contact with officers of the East Riding to see what can be done about enforcement of repairs.  He said, “Having successfully restored the water supply to an elderly lady in King Street when a local business had been rather high handed, I know that the East Riding has certain powers.  I am currently investigating to see what can be done.”

Cllr Symon Fraser said, “We have been called to Eastgate before.  The last time was for kerbing that was dangerous and the East Riding have fixed this.  However, the real problem is that this whole operation is out of character for this area.  I would like to see this brownfield site being developed for low-cost residential use and the dairy relocated to a site more suitable.”
