Driffield "Orphan" to be adopted

SaltBin

Good  news for the residents of Woldholme Avenue and St John's Road - the grit bin at their junction has finally been identified and will be filled up within the next week!   Cllr Felicity Temple was informed on Tuesday that following much investigation the "orphan" bin has been identified as belonging to the old Humberside County Council and will be formally adopted by the ERYC with immediate effect.

Cllr Temple said, "I live on Woldholme Avenue and I know that the grit and salt in the bin finally ran out just before the last cold snap. I have been asking for it to be filled ever since stocks got low.  Because since neither Town Council, nor East Riding had it on their list, no one would accept responsibility for filling it up!   I have been all round the houses trying to get someone to take it on. The  worst-case scenario would be for it to be put forward to the East Riding as a new request, because that would take quite a while for it to move up the list of priorities and meantime more braking cars would be sliding into St John's Road in frosty spells.  Apparently they had 135 requests for bins following the last spate of frostly weather.  I am pleased that Liz Philpot has managed to discover archive information which allows the East Riding to take this bin on."

Cllr Fraser added, "Thankfully this ridiculous situation has now been sorted.  The Town Council no longer fill any grit bins, they can put them on the list, but it is the East Riding who arrange for those adopted to be filled on a regular basis."   Cllr Owen agreed, saying, "I know from others' experience that this junction can be treacherous.   At least if there is grit and salt on hand something can be done to prevent accidents."

Cllr Temple finished by saying, "Now what I need to press for is a litter bin along that stretch because people have become used to using the grit bin for that purpose.   Can I also appeal to dog owners to continue to clean up after their dogs - special bags are available from customer services at Westgarth - and to stop dogs using the areas where bulbs are coming up through the grass."
