Residents called on their ERYC councillors to try to put in place safety measures on the road which leads to Northfield School and to the playground.

At the meeting the officers could immediately see what the problems were and they agreed to work in co-operation with the school and with residents to put in place an improved scheme of signage and road markings in an effort to make the approaches to the school and playground safer.

Speaking at the meeting Councillor Symon Fraser explained: “The ERYC have done a survey of speeds on the street and they have found that average speeds are at about 19 – 20 mph, it is therefore unlikely that there would be Police support for any reduction in the actual speed limit but the site visit was very valuable as it showed highways officials that there would be real scope to improve safety through better signage and road markings.”

Councillor Felicity Temple commented: “The residents have real and justifiable worries about safety, especially for children near to Northfield School and the Playground. The signage is not adequate and the road markings are sub standard.  We have asked the ERYC officers to come up with a scheme of improvements which can then be discussed with residents and the school.”

After the meeting Councillor Jonathan Owen added “These improvements should be able to be implemented under the 'safe routes to school scheme', and we are grateful to the residents for highlighting the problems.”
