Do you fancy being an East Riding "Special"?

Reducing Crime is at the forefront of everyone's list of priorities and Conservative Councillors at Thursdays Reduced crime committee meeting welcomed Police moves to boost the number of Specials on the beat.

After the meeting East Riding Councillor Jonathan Owen commented “ The Police are to be commended on their efforts to recruit more “Specials”.  For years they were a prominent and respected part of community life and the role they can play in providing enhanced police cover can make a real difference to the strength of the local Police Teams.”

In a move to attract more Specials and in acknowledgement of the valuable contribution they make the Police have for the first time budgetted to pay for the services provided by the Special Constabulary.

In added comment East Riding Councillor Felicity Temple said “For years you would always see Specials out and about at events and at the weekend.   As they were always part of the community people often knew them. It was always reassuring to know that in times of need the police had a back up force they could rely on for help and at long last they are to be rewarded for their efforts.”

Police Officers at the meeting were quick to point out that the Specials were to be recruited to provide additional manpower at peak times and not as an option to full time officers.

East Riding Councillor Symon Fraser added “Increasing the number of Specials available to back up the Police is brilliant, it brings policing right back into the community and is a great idea.  I fully support this initiative to improve local Police coverage and look forward to seeing more Specials around Driffield and the other towns in the East Riding.”
