Rural Fare Concessions- Driffield Councillors pledge reversal of cuts

The Conservative Group on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council has today promised to re-instate concessionary fares for school pupils which were controversially axed in this year's budget.

Education Spokesman Cllr Penny Peacock said, "I believe the cuts to concessionary fares are both unjust and wrong.  Once again, this penalises all residents but particularly those living in the rural and more remote parts of the East Riding."

Conservative Group Leader Cllr Stephen Parnaby said, "This is the problem in cross-party budgets.  We never agreed with the cuts proposed by the Liberal Democrats and give our promise to reinstate them next year if our budget proposals are allowed then."

Cllrs Fraser, Temple and Owen issued a joint statement, "We are delighted to be able to offer clear blue water between ourselves and the rest of the Council.  We will always back moves to redress the balance as far as our rural communities are concerned.  This sort of cut was always going to cause a problem when you consider the distances some children have to travel - we need to help keep youngsters in school, not put more obstacles in their way."
