Cycle Track to Kelleythorpe

This issue has once again been the subject of headlines in the local press. Recently there have been two collisions involving cyclists, resulting in serious injury to one Driffield worker. Driffield Councillors on the ERYC have raised this issue in the past with officers on the East Riding and asked for a safe route to this outlying Industrial Estate. With the move of Consignia's sorting office and the revitalisation of Driffield businesses, it was felt important that all sectors of the community should be considered.

As I said at the time, we need to get the Local Transport Plan to include a cycle way between Kelleythorpe and Driffield. We need to press for funding from this Labour Government for money to create good sustainable non-car routes. All we hear is how we should all be using our cars less - this is not feasible for many in our rural setting, but something as simple as a cycle route along this stretch of dangerous road would fit right in with the Government's much talked-about agenda for sustainability.

This improvement cannot be funded out of council tax by the East Riding Council - there are already major budget pressures on this year's budget but we will keep pushing for improvements to protect our residents and make sure Driffield is high on the priority list.
