Flooding in Stamford Bridge - all round support from MP & MEPs

Below is a letter from Robert Goodwill, MEP to Eliot Morley at DEFRA (regarding last year's floods in our Constituency - I think you will agree this highlights the way all our elected representatives are working together for the good of the Constituency.

"Dear Mr Morley,

Re. Flood Defence Scheme, Stamford Bridge

As one of the MEPs representing the region of Yorkshire & the Humber I am concerned about the nature and scope of flood defence proposals at Stamford Bridge on the River Derwent.

I am given to understand that the current proposal will offer protection mainly to the East of the river. The reason for this would appear to be that land to the East and West of the river fall into two different "cells".

I feel that a "community wide" proposal drawing in both sides of the Derwent would be far more satisfactory as it would afford protection to the properties, including a factory, to the West of the river. If the proposal remains in its current form I fear land to the West risks greater flooding, as the watercourse will be diverted west on reaching a defence scheme to the east.

I understand MP Greg Knight and members of East Riding Council have already made representations to this effect, but I would like to add my name to those calling for a review of the current scheme.

Yours sincerely

Robert Goodwill MEP
