New Years Message from us all

New Years Message from ERYC Cllrs. Symon Fraser, Felicity Temple and Jonathan Owen.

First things first, we hope that you have had a happy Christmas and that you have been able to catch up on all the news from your friends.

Who could have guessed at this time last year what was to befall us in 2001. It seems like years have passed since the start of the Foot & Mouth Crisis but it was only mid February 2001 when that scourge hit the country.

We were lucky in the East Riding not to be directly affected by the disease but the knock on effects were felt by many farming and nonfarming businesses in our area. Perhaps the most important lesson of the crisis was that farming no longer stands on its own in that type of situation and many other businesses also suffered through no fault of their own.

Then on September 11th came the terrorist atrocities in New York. Again we were not directly affected but the uncertainty and fears of the whole world still filter through to almost everyone.

So what of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

What does 2002 hold in store for us? Well I’m no fortuneteller, but I will predict that the pressure on resources will cause difficulties but that we will continue to work to do our very best for Driffield residents.

We will continue to work with Driffield Schools to press for improved provision for Driffield youngsters.

We will continue to work to promote and reinvigorate the economy of the area.

We will continue to work to provide better facilities for recreation in the area.

We will continue to push for improvements to the roadways and cycleways around Driffield.

We will endeavour to always be constructive, consistent and committed to the residents of the area.

Symon Fraser
