Councillors request re-scheduling of town roadworks.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council Highways Department has agreed to re-schedule road-works on Beverley Road and Middle Street in response to concerns from ERYC Ward Councillors Symon Fraser, Barbara Hall and FelicityTemple.

The proposed works will involve the excavation and re-surfacing of three mini-roundabouts on important routes both leading to and within Driffield town centre.

The Beverley Road/St Johns Road mini roundabout was to be excavated on one weekend in December and then re-surfaced on the next December weekend, involving the closure of St Johns Road and traffic controls on Beverley Road.

Both mini-roundabouts at the junction of Lockwood Street & Middle Street South and the  George Street / Middle Street  junction were also to be extensively repaired in December.

Following representations from the Ward Councillors these works are now due to be done early in 2009.

Driffield & Rural ERYC Councillor Symon Fraser commented, “I am delighted that the engineers have re-scheduled these works.  We are very happy that the roads are being improved and repaired but we did not want to see disruption to town traffic on the vitally important trading weekends in the run up to Christmas.”

Fellow Councillor Barbara Hall remarked, “The three weekends in the approach to Christmas are probably the most important shopping weekends for Driffield residents and we wanted to make sure that the roads and footways leading to the town are not covered in cones and barriers.  The engineers have been brilliant, helpfully agreeing to do these welcome improvements in January and February.”

Councillor FelicityTemple added, “As a cyclist I am particularly pleased that these busy junctions are to be improved and repaired but I had immediate concerns for Driffield’s retailers when I saw that the works were to be done in December.  I am very glad that the East Riding highways department has reacted so quickly to our request for the repairs to be re-scheduled avoiding chaos and disruption for shoppers just before Christmas.”
