Environmental Improvements for Driffield - ERYC delivers

East Riding of Yorkshire Council deliver environmental improvements for Driffield

The streets and footpaths in and around Driffield have been and are still vibrating to the sound of workmen and contractors as a number of important highway and environmental improvements are being completed. Work started at the beginning of the year with the re-construction of the flower beds at the junction of Albion Street and Eastgate South.

The next scheme to commence was the extension of the footways and cycle paths connecting the town via Beverley Road to both the Showground and to the existing cycleway to Kelleythorpe Industrial Estate, Auchinleck Close and Ramsden Drive.

Then came the recently completed, major resurfacing works to New Road and Exchange Street and now following the current consultation we hope to soon to see the installation of an extensive “home zone” style twenty mph limited area.

The streets involved in this extensive area are those leading to and surrounding Northfield Infants School. The Mount, Eastfield Road, Star Hill, Northfield Road, Northfield Crescent, Park Avenue, Southfield Road and Woodland Rise are among the streets included in this major scheme with a special school safety zone in the area immediately adjacent to Northfield School.

East Riding of Yorkshire Councillor, Barbara Hall commented, “The improvements will make a real difference to hundreds of families making a safer living and playing environment over a wide area of Driffield. The improved footpaths and cycleway to the Showground will also help to connect the town to this important and unique facility within the East Riding”

Councillor Felicity Temple remarked, “I especially welcome the improvements to the Albion Street and Eastgate South junction.  The previous shrubs had become overgrown and untidy, the new planting looks really smart and will help the town regain the Gold Award we won in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition. I completely support the twenty mph zone it will make the whole area much more family friendly and improve road safety for all road users.  In particular, the new surface along Exchange Street will be far more comfortable on my bike!”

Councillor Symon Fraser said,” Over the last few years Exchange Street and New Road had been dug up by just about every statutory provider. The surface was very poor and the Council was legally obliged to allow the temporary patching to settle and subside before the renewal works could be done. The new surface is a job well jobbed really improving this important route into the town centre. The contractors worked with the Council to minimise the disruption to traffic whilst the works were done. “

Councillor Symon Fraser added, “As a school Governor at Northfield I know how much the children and parents will welcome and appreciate the scheme. Both the twenty mph area and the school safety zone will make a huge difference to childrens’ safety as they come and go from our excellent school.”
