Secure by Design - let's get it right at the beginning

Councillors at Monday's planning meeting supported Councillor Symon Fraser when he urged officers to liaise more closely with developers to incorporate safe lighting on new developments.  He said "In line with the Council's commitment to reducing crime, we felt it would be beneficial if developers could work with the Council in terms of giving greater consideration to building-in security features at the design stage of site development in the future.  This would work in everyone's favour in the way of peace of mind for potential buyers, an additional sales point and cost-benefit to the Council."

Humberside Police employ an architect to assess designs for Housing Associations, and if they meet the criteria they are accredited with being Secure by Design - this system needs to be brought into private sector housing.

Cllr Felicity Temple also added "The emphasis would be to use design and technology to improve the "crime resistance nature" of developments right from the start.  For example, lighting layouts can reduce crime and we need to get the design right in the first place."
