Driffield ERYC Cllrs meet with Developers over Driff9 site

East Riding of Yorkshire Councillor, Barbara Hall commented, “As ERYC Ward Councillors we wanted to take action to ensure that a number of specific concerns raised by residents were tackled. So, to take these concerns forward Councillors Fraser, Temple and I met representatives from the Developers of the Cattle Market Site, Driffield Town Council and Planning and Highway Officers from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to explore how a number of features of the proposals could be addressed. The meeting was held at Driffield Town Council Offices and the discussions were helpful, frank, open and constructive.”

Councillor Symon Fraser reported, ”The planning application put forward for the Cattle Market site has to be decided on ‘planning grounds’, our role is to try to make sure that the legitimate concerns raised by those who live nearby and by the town are addressed. The talks were very helpful and the developers are willing to work with the Planning and Highways Officers to bring forward amended proposals which in our view go along way to addressing the concerns which we raised.”

Councillor Felicity Temple remarked, “From talking to residents, their biggest worries are around traffic, parking and road safety on Eastgate South. We asked the developers and highways officers to work together to draw up revised proposals for road safety on the route to the site, which they have agreed to do.  One of our suggestions was for an extension of the town centre 20mph zone to include Albion Street and Eastgate South and for pedestrian and cycle facilities to be detailed to provide a safer road and street environment for all types of road users and also for those residents who live in this area.   We also underlined the need for the provision of long stay car parking, and for parking for residents of Eastgate South.”

Councillor Symon Fraser added, “The opportunity the development gives to make a central feature of the Beck was also discussed, the developers brought forward amended plans showing the full opening of the Beck right across the site and a landscaping scheme making the river into a real environmental feature of the scheme. The developers also agreed on a reconfigured town centre community facility and they offered to meet with the Town Council Clerk and Mayor to discuss how this could be taken forward. The developers have amended the original plans to now include a really exciting central town community facility.”

Councillor Barbara Hall added: “These discussions have shown the value of the Town Council being prepared to work with us to tackle these major issues in our town.  I hope they can continue to work positively with us.”

The developers will now need to work with the Highways Officers to bring forward detailed plans of the improved road safety proposals and these along with the amended proposals for the Beck and the Community Facilities will then be submitted to the ERYC planning department. Consultation will then take place on these alterations before the plans then go back to the East Riding of Yorkshire Planning Committee for determination.
