Sledmere Event Hailed a Success

Despite the torrential rain and flooding en route over 100 people turned out on Friday to our Musical Event held at Sledmere House by kind permission of Sir Tatton Sykes.

We were also enthralled by Lord Stockton, who seemed to have packed so much into his life so far.  We knew he had been a Foreign Correspondent for the Telegraph, shot down in a helicopter during the Viet Nam war, a successful Chairman of the Macmillan Publishing House, a farmer, and a politician both in the House of Lords and then as an MEP.  His entertaining and amusing talk however was mostly around his political life, touching on his youth when he worked for both his Grandfather, Harold Macmillan and his father, Morris, but also tales from the House of Lords.

As well as Sir Tatton and his brother Jeremy, also enjoying the evening were the Rt Hon Greg Knight, MP, his wife Janet, TImothy Kirkhope, MEP and the Earl (not pictured) and Countess of Swinton.  Cllr Felicity Temple, Chairman of the Constituency Association is also shown above beside Sir Tatton Sykes, Bt.

The Merlin Consort sang a truly stunning set of Gershwin and Cole Porter songs, and Wendy Goodson and the other soloists really made the most of the accoustics in the Library.  It was fabulous.

The Buffet wasn't bad either!  Thanks to Martin Temple, Chairman of the Events Committee and the rest of the committee seen below putting the final touches to the tables.
