B1248 Beverley – Bainton roadway improvements announced.

Proposals to improve road safety and hazard awareness on the busy B1248 Bainton to Beverley highway have been unveiled. The route has suffered from problems with a high number of accidents involving both fatalities and injuries. The current proposals involve an extensive review of signage and road markings to highlight the driving hazards presented to users.

The signage along the length of road from Beverley to Bainton is to be completely upgraded using new high visibility boarding and particular danger spots will also receive roadway marking. Two specific stretches, the hill crest just to the South of Bainton and the approaches to the Kilwick – Middleton crossroads will be marked with double white lines, prohibiting drivers and motorcyclists from crossing into the path of oncoming traffic and making it much easier for Police to take action against drivers.

Commenting on the proposals Cllr Symon Fraser, Portfolio holder for highways and streetscene said, “These significant proposals to improve signage and markings will help to make drivers aware of the hazards they face on this route. In the final reckoning the safety of the route depends on drivers driving within the capabilities of the road, their vehicles and their skills, these improvements will help to give better information to road users.”

Councillor Felicity Temple added, “There have been a number of tragic accidents along this route and these improvements will help to reduce accidents and the toll on the predominantly local users of this road. To be able to improve the signage along the whole route and highlight specific danger areas with enhanced road markings will help reduce the cost on local lives.”
