Way forward for East Riding Waste

The East Riding Conservatives on the Cabinet have today pushed through a decision, which will allow Council officers, and the Authority’s Waste Disposal Contractors to move forward with plans to boost recycling and recovery.

The ambitious proposals, to take on board fully the recommendations of a recent consultation process, will set a course to enable residents to recycle a much wider variety of household waste and allow WRG, the contractors, to bring proposals for a state of the art “energy from waste” recovery plant.

Commenting after the meeting, Cllr Symon Fraser, Portfolio Holder, Environment & Waste, said, “We are responding to the demands of East Riding residents, they gave us the clear message, that they want to be able to be much more active recyclers and we must make sure that they are able to achieve this.  An additional part of this drive will be the installation of a power station fuelled with waste, this will allow us to recover even more from our waste which cannot be recycled”.

The  search for a site for such an installation has not yet started but in added comment Cllr Fraser stated, “There are always local concerns about these waste handling facilities, people still think the technologies are rooted in the past, the truth is that modern day emission controls and environmental monitoring are so good that we can move forward with these proposals in full confidence.

We now must move forward to deliver a comprehensive plan which lays out the steps we must take to enable East Riding of Yorkshire residents to achieve the re-cycling they want. The energy from waste technologies are an integral part of this drive and will enable us to move forward the measures we need to make re-cycling possible.
